directory services

A source of network identity information. Directory services act as a repository of information about users, devices and services on a network, including names, locations, capabilities, access rights and security authorizations. Most enterprises maintain their own directory services resources, and all the major network server vendors offer directory services software. Important directory services standards include the OSI's X.500 model and LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol).
