Programming language developed for the Web. One of the guiding principles of Java was that every computer system would implement it in a standard way, which meant that, in theory, any software written in Java can run unmodified on any computer system. It turned out there were practical limitations to this concept, but it provided the impetus for the creation of a standardized set of infrastructure software components, called J2EE (Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition), which today forms the basis of many of the leading web systems software platforms. Sun Microsystems owns and co-ordinates the development of Java, J2EE, and the client specifications J2SE (Standard Edition) and J2ME (Micro Edition).
